What Is SNGPL? Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited Complete Guide 2026
SNGPL (Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited) is Pakistan’s largest gas company. It supplies gas to over 7.2 million consumers across Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, and Azad Kashmir. If you live in any of these areas and have a piped gas connection, SNGPL is your provider.
What Does SNGPL Actually Do?
SNGPL does two things: it transmits gas through high-pressure pipelines from source to city, and it distributes that gas to homes, shops, and factories through the local network.
It does not produce gas itself. It buys gas from local fields and through RLNG imports — and delivers it to your meter.
SNGPL also does not set your gas price. That is done by OGRA (Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority) and the Federal Government. SNGPL collects the bill on their behalf.
This distinction matters. When your bill goes up, SNGPL is usually the messenger not the one who made the decision.
Which Areas Does SNGPL Cover?
If you live in the northern half of Pakistan, SNGPL is your gas company.
Punjab: Lahore, Faisalabad, Rawalpindi, Multan, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Sargodha, Gujrat, Bahawalpur, Sheikhupura, Rahim Yar Khan, Sahiwal, and surrounding districts
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Peshawar, Abbottabad, Mardan, Nowshera, Swabi, Haripur, Mansehra
Islamabad Capital Territory: Full coverage
Azad Kashmir: Mirpur, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot and select surrounding areas
If you live in Sindh or Balochistan Karachi, Hyderabad, Quetta your provider is SSGC (Sui Southern Gas Company), not SNGPL. Not sure which one serves your area? Call 1199 with your address and they will confirm in one minute.
A Brief History of SNGPL
1952: Natural gas is discovered at the Sui gas fields in Balochistan. It is one of the largest gas discoveries in Asia at that time.
1963–1964: Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited is incorporated as a private limited company in 1963, then converted into a public limited company in January 1964. It takes over the existing Sui-Multan and Dhulian-Rawalpindi pipeline systems and begins commercial operations, initially serving just 67 consumers.
1970s–1980s: The network expands rapidly across Punjab and KPK. Gas moves from a novelty to a daily essential for cooking and heating in urban areas.
1990s: SNGPL is listed on the Karachi Stock Exchange (now Pakistan Stock Exchange, ticker: SNGP), allowing private investment while the government retains majority ownership.
2015 onwards: Domestic gas production begins declining. SNGPL starts mixing imported RLNG into the network to cover the shortfall in high-demand areas.
2026: SNGPL serves over 7.2 million consumers across a distribution network exceeding 149,000 kilometres of pipeline, covering over 5,500 towns and villages.
What Services Can You Get From SNGPL?
Check and Pay Your Gas Bill
Every SNGPL consumer gets a monthly gas bill. You can check your bill online at sngpl.com.pk using your consumer number — no office visit needed. Bills are available to view, download, and print any time. You can pay through JazzCash, Easypaisa, bank branch, or 1-Link ATM.
Apply for a New Connection
You can apply for a new domestic, commercial, or industrial gas connection through SNGPL’s online portal at sngpl.com.pk. As of 2025, all new domestic connections are issued under the RLNG tariff. The process involves an online application, a site survey, a demand notice payment, and then meter installation.
Reconnection After Disconnection
If your gas was cut due to unpaid bills, pay all outstanding dues first, then apply for reconnection online. Reconnection normally takes 7 to 10 working days after the application is submitted and payment is confirmed.
Register a Complaint
You can report a gas leak, billing dispute, meter fault, low pressure, or connection delay through SNGPL’s complaint system. Options: online at sngpl.com.pk, phone on 1199, or the SNGPL ConnectOn app on Google Play.
Gas leak? Do not call from inside the building. Step outside first, then call 1199. Do not switch any lights or electrical items on or off, and do not light a match or flame until the SNGPL team arrives and clears the area.
Two Types of SNGPL Gas Meters
Most people do not know there are two different meter types. Which one you have affects how you are billed.
Conventional (Postpaid) Meter
This is the standard meter used by most SNGPL consumers. An SNGPL meter reader visits your property every month, records the reading, and a bill is generated based on units consumed. You pay after using the gas. If the meter reader cannot access your meter, SNGPL issues an estimated bill and adjusts it the following month when a reading is taken.
Prepaid Smart Meter
SNGPL has been rolling out prepaid meters in selected areas, mainly in Lahore and Islamabad. With a prepaid meter, you load credit in advance similar to topping up a mobile and gas supply stops automatically when the credit runs out. There is no monthly bill to worry about.
Prepaid meters are more accurate, reduce billing disputes, and let you control your gas spending in real time. If your meter has a small digital display showing a rupee balance, you have a prepaid meter.
What Is on Your Gas Bill?
Your monthly bill includes several charges. Understanding each one helps you spot if something looks wrong.
Gas consumption charges: The main charge, calculated on units consumed multiplied by your applicable tariff rate. Domestic consumers have a slab system: the more you use, the higher your per-unit rate.
Fixed monthly charge: Billed regardless of how much gas you use. For Protected domestic consumers it is Rs. 600/month. For Non-Protected consumers it is Rs. 1,500 3,000/month depending on the slab.
Meter rent: A small monthly charge of Rs. 40 for the meter equipmen GIDC (Gas Infrastructure Development Cess); government levy collected through your bill to fund gas infrastructure expansion.
GST (General Sales Tax): 18% applied on the subtotal of gas charges.
FPA (Fuel Price Adjustment): A monthly variable charge that reflects changes in international gas prices and Pakistan’s accumulated gas sector debt. This is the reason your bill can go up even when your consumption stays exactly the same.
