What Is SNGPL?

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited, commonly known as SNGPL or Sui Gas, is a government-owned public company that manages the transmission and distribution of natural gas across northern Pakistan.

SNGPL was established in 1963 under the Companies Ordinance. Its head office is in Lahore. The company operates under the regulatory oversight of OGRA (Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority), which sets the gas tariff rates that appear on every consumer bill.

SNGPL is one of two major gas utilities in Pakistan the other being SSGCL (Sui Southern Gas Company Limited), which serves Sindh and Balochistan. If you live in Punjab, KPK, or AJK, your gas provider is SNGPL.

A Brief History of SNGPL

Understanding where SNGPL came from helps explain how it operates today.

1952 — Natural gas is discovered at the Sui gas fields in Balochistan, one of the largest gas discoveries in Asia at the time.

1963 — Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited is formally incorporated to build and manage the pipeline network that would carry Sui gas from Balochistan to consumers across northern Pakistan.

1970s–1980s — The network expands rapidly across Punjab and KPK. Gas connections move from a luxury to a household essential for cooking and heating in urban areas.

1990s — SNGPL is listed on the Karachi Stock Exchange (now Pakistan Stock Exchange), allowing private investment while the government retains majority control.

2015 onwards — Domestic gas production begins declining. SNGPL introduces RLNG (imported liquefied natural gas) into the network to meet growing demand in areas where pipeline gas is insufficient.

2026 — SNGPL serves over 9 million consumers and operates one of the largest gas distribution networks in Asia.

What Services Does SNGPL Provide?

SNGPL provide following services:

Gas Bill Management

Every SNGPL consumer receives a monthly gas bill calculated on units consumed. You can check your SNGPL gas bill online using your 11-digit consumer number no office visit, no waiting. Bills are available to view, download, and print within seconds.

New Gas Connections

Residential, commercial, and industrial consumers can apply for a new connection through SNGPL’s online portal. The process involves an application, a site survey, a demand notice payment, and then meter installation. The entire SNGPL new connection process from application to gas supply typically takes 4 to 12 weeks.

RLNG Connections

In areas where pipeline gas is not yet available, SNGPL offers RLNG connections imported liquefied natural gas that is re-gasified and supplied through the same network. RLNG tariff rates are higher than system gas and are set separately by OGRA.

Disconnection and Reconnection

If your gas supply has been cut due to unpaid bills, a safety issue, or your own request SNGPL handles the reconnection after dues are cleared and a formal request is submitted. Reconnection normally takes 7 to 10 working days.

Complaint Registration

Consumers can report gas leaks, billing disputes, meter faults, low pressure, or slow connection progress through SNGPL’s complaint system online at sngpl.com.pk, by phone on 1199, or through the SNGPL ConnectOn app.

Types of SNGPL Gas Meters

Not every SNGPL meter works the same way. There are two types currently in use:

Conventional (Postpaid) Meter

This is the standard meter used by most consumers. A reading is taken every month by an SNGPL meter reader, and a bill is generated based on units consumed. You pay after using the gas hence “postpaid.” If you have this type, your SNGPL meter reading and how it translates into charges is worth understanding so you can verify each bill is correct.

Prepaid Smart Meter

SNGPL has been rolling out prepaid smart meters in selected areas, particularly in Lahore and Islamabad. With a prepaid meter, you load credit in advance similar to a mobile top-up and gas supply stops when credit runs out. There is no monthly bill. Prepaid meters are more accurate, reduce billing disputes, and let consumers control their gas spending in real time.

If you are unsure which meter type you have, check your meter unit prepaid meters have a small digital display showing remaining credit in rupees.

How Is Your SNGPL Bill Calculated?

SNGPL does not set its own prices. Gas tariffs are decided by OGRA and revised periodically. Consumers are billed on a slab system the more units you use, the higher your per-unit rate.

Your monthly bill includes:

  • Gas consumption charges based on MMBtu consumed
  • Fixed monthly charges billed regardless of usage
  • GIDC (Gas Infrastructure Development Cess)
  • GST: General Sales Tax at 18%
  • Carbon levy added in recent OGRA revisions

Understanding these line items helps you spot errors before paying. If a charge looks wrong, you can register an SNGPL complaint online and raise a billing dispute without visiting any office.
